ROTTERDAM
Rotterdam is a young city of Netherlands that triggers the hip-hop trends of the European continent. Situated in the province of South Holland, this lively city embraces the tranquillity of the Nieuwe Maas River flowing by the side and nestles one of the largest and most modern ports in the world. After the devastation of the German bombarding in 1940, life in Rotterdam leaped back to normalcy and prosperity with the passage of time. Today it is the major foreign-trade centre of the Netherlands and its second largest city.
The warmth of the local people and architectural splendours amidst public accommodations lure in citizens from different foreign lands and they leave with a memory to cherish for long. If the colourful and chic hotels and bed and breakfasts of the city are teeming with family tourists, the hostels are buzzing with the adventurous teenage group. The amusing features of Rotterdam revolve mostly around its port area. The volume of transaction and rate of anchoring by ships of different shapes and sizes create a breathtaking view.
The city's port is vast enough to be segregated on different side of the river Nieuwe Maas. The inner port remains connected to the outer port named Hoek van Holland by the New Waterway. Europoort, a large harbour area opposite Hoek van Holland was built in 1960. The Rotterdam main dock area deals mainly with unloading and storing of petroleum product. Much of Rotterdam’s maritime financial balance sheet calculations are determined by the rate of transit trade with the Ruhr district of NW Germany, which is connected to the city by several waterways and oil pipelines. It is a beautiful experience to take a stroll by the port side over the elegant Erasmus Bridge. During the Summer Carnival of Rotterdam, the city population doubles up with a swelling bunch of tourists. The scarcity of accommodation reaches to the top and often the visitors end up taking private apartments for rent to sway in the carnival mood.
