Honduras makes sure that with its idyllic settings, breath taking views of the North Atlantic Ocean, the wonderful rugged coastlines towards Caribbean Sea and warm welcome, travellers quickly feel comfortable and at home. Being host to 15 national parks, 2 biosphere reserves, and 10 biological reserves protecting over 200 indigenous bird species, and more than 20 large forest dwelling mammals, it is like an open air ecological reserve. Thus the Río Plátano Biosphere Reserve at the La Mosquitia region of Honduras is aptly titled as “The Last Lungs of Central America" and added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List. Located in Central America, the topography of this nation is dominated by not-so-high mountain ranges. However, there are some fertile plateaus, river valleys and narrow coastal plains in Honduras too.
The past of Honduras is culturally rich and extremely eventful right from the pre-Columbian remnants of the city of Copán to the turbulent days of the “the football war”. After independence from Spanish rule in 1821, the country joined the United Provinces of Central America and became a republic in 1840. Despite its economic hardships, Honduras boasts of an impressive line up of football teams under the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras.
