Brunei Darussalam has been mesmerising visitors from time unknown with its pristine settings, beguiling sceneries and awesome architecture. The land of hospitable and charming people is enriched with magnificent mosques, water village, Jerudong Theme Park, rainforest and National Parks that are rich in flora and fauna. Located by the South China Sea, Brunei Darussalam belongs to the island of Borneo. This Southeast Asian nation comprises of two unconnected territories and except the hilly regions of the west, Brunei Darussalam consists of flat plains along the coastline. Its landscape is also enriched with natural resources like petroleum, natural gas and timber. Capitalising on that, Brunei Darussalam enjoys a membership of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the (British) Commonwealth of Nations.
With the widespread of Islam in the fifteenth century, Brunei Darussalam became an independent sultanate and a powerful state that fought out the Spanish forces. But it fell into decay and lost Sarawak in 1841, becoming a British protectorate in 1888 and a British dependency in 1905. During World War II it was liberated by Australia in 1945 from Japanese occupation and went under British partial rule. On January 1, 1984, Brunei Darussalam became a fully independent state. Today, it has one of the highest per capita incomes in Asia, and the sultan is believed to be one of the richest men in the world.
