The capital city of Austria is Vienna. Situated on the Danube River at the foot of the Vienna Woods, it is at the heart of the economic and cultural life of Austria. Vienna is an important port and a strategic communications hub between the Alps and the Carpathian Mountains and is linked by road, rail and air to all the important cities of Europe.
Vienna is the headquarters of many international organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN Industrial Development Organization, and OPEC. So, every type of accommodation is available, for the business traveller and the tourist, from the upmarket and trendy to rustic, from gay-friendly to the luxurious. It can be an expensive place to visit; cheap hotels are scarce, but can be found even in central districts.
Vienna has everything, restaurants, nightlife, discos, pubs, theatres, parks and gardens. About one-fifth of Austria's population live there, enjoying as well as a continental climate, its many parks, monuments, educational and cultural institutions. Vienna has plenty of museums and art galleries, including the Albertina, the Museum of the 20th Century, the Natural History Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts.
Vienna is famous for its theatre, opera and Strauss waltzes, as well as the music of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert. The Vienna Sezession group of painters and the philosophical Vienna Circle are also important in Vienna’s cultural history.
There are many monumental buildings of different architectural styles that reflect the city’s cultural importance; Gothic, Renaissance and baroque, through to modern apartment buildings of the post-World War II period.
